What Is Dry Rot?

Serpula lacrymans, commonly referred to as Dry Rot, is a wood-destroying fungus. Contrary to its name, the fungus requires water for germination, growth, and survival, as do all wood-destroying fungi. For this reason, a food source in the form of wood, as well as moisture and dampness, are essential for its development. If either of these factors is absent, the fungus will cease to grow and eventually die. Once water penetrates wood, bacteria and microfungi colonise it, breaking down a portion of the cell structure and making the wood more porous, thus allowing it to absorb more moisture. These fungi can colonise wood if the conditions are right and it is sufficiently damp.

Fungus spores settle on damp wood and germinate before the first signs of growth are visible. As the fine hyphae generate enzymes, the wood becomes more porous and more moisture is able to penetrate. The hyphae quickly expand into a larger mass of mycelium, which spreads across and into the wood, as well as through masonry.

In humid conditions, the mycelium takes on a white, cotton-wool-like appearance. When the environment is particularly humid and stagnant, water droplets form, earning the fungus its name, lacrymans (from the Latin lacrymans, meaning “tear-dropper”). This is due to the fungus leeching excess water from the wood.

As the infestation progresses, a fruiting body known as a Sporophore develops, resembling a fleshy pancake with a surface covered in large pores and an orange/ochre colouration. These pores are the grooves that bear the spores, which congregate around the body in a red dust that may be visible on furniture and joinery surfaces. In favourable conditions, Dry Rot can even spread through dry materials and brickwork.

Dry Rot Growing

At times, it can be spotted from over two metres away from its food source, presenting a serious risk of contamination across other rooms and even beyond the premises.

The rot fungus, Serpula lacrymans, needs a moisture content of 28-30% to begin attacking wood. Once established, however, it can withstand a lower moisture content of 20%. Its growth is restricted at relative humidity levels below 86%, but can remain dormant if the humidity is above 76%.
