Indicators Of Dampness In A Property

Common signs of moisture in a building include: damp patches on walls, condensation on windows, mould growth, and musty odours.

A musty smell pervaded the room.

Mould and mildew on walls, floors, and ceilings should be addressed.

Cold or damp walls, floors, and ceilings can be a problem in any building. It is important to take steps to ensure that these areas are properly insulated and heated in order to protect against the cold and damp. Proper insulation and heating can help to reduce the risk of mould and mildew developing, which can cause health problems if left untreated.

Patches of discoloured or darkened plaster or walls can be seen.

Wallpaper that has been peeled or lifted is unsightly and should be removed or replaced.

Windows have an excessive amount of condensation, amongst other things.

If you observe any of these indicators, kindly contact London Damp Treatments to receive guidance regarding your structure’s damp issues. Phone us on 0208 0162508.

Is it Possible for Damp to Cause Structural Damage?

Damp can severely undermine the structural integrity of a building. When left unaddressed, mortar can break and salt streaks will appear on the walls. Corrosion of steel and iron fasteners can further deteriorate the structure, with the potential for infected mortar and plaster to become detached in extreme conditions. Aside from this, dampness can cause a range of secondary problems, like rare wood-based fungus growth and the deterioration of wallpaper, plaster and paint. A damp proof course is a highly effective rising damp treatment, and it’s essential to avoid damage to a property.

What is rising damp?

Depending on masonry type and exterior ground sections, the most significant damp masonry rise in walls is one meter high.

There’s a telltale horizontal tide mark on walls caused by rising damp, along with discolouration, spots, peeling wallpaper and white salt stains leached from the masonry by the water. Let us be your go-to for any issues related to rising damp.

The Best Rising Damp Treatment

For treating and preventing rising damp, we deploy a range of techniques and solutions. Injecting a silicone-based chemical into the wall via a series of small holes is one of the most efficient and economical approaches.

Once it has dried, a water-resistant barrier is formed within the wall. Generally, some of the internal plaster which has been contaminated by salts from rising damp must be taken away and replaced with a salt-proof plaster, allowing the moisture in the wall to dry out naturally.

What Is Penetrating Damp?

Rain penetration often referred to as penetrating damp, can occur in a home when excessive water gets in through an external wall. This can happen through walls, roofs, windows, or door surrounds at any property level, and is frequently caused by roof tile flaws, broken pointing, blocked weep holes, or faulty seals.

Address penetrating dampness in your home as soon as possible to minimise the damage it can cause. Phone our damp proofing team at 0208 0162508 to arrange a survey.

Penetrating Damp Treatment

Penetrating damp is one of the most hazardous and damaging issues you can have in your home. It is also referred to as rain penetration, as it occurs when water from the outside enters the building. The source of water infiltration can usually be identified and tackled with budget-friendly solutions. Our knowledgeable moisture-proofing technicians can survey and fix penetrating damp issues.

What Is The Purpose Of A Silicone Damp Proof Injection?

Damp proofing is a process for stopping moisture from infiltrating a building, especially from rising damp. Look for a ‘tide line’ of yellowish or brownish stains or blown plaster on the lower section of walls above skirting boards – these are usually indicative of rising dampness. Other tell-tale signs include decaying or wet skirting boards or floors.

Performing a short repair for rising damp, such as repointing or painting over the damp, will not prove cost-effective in the long run and necessitate a repeat of the job later.

At London Damp Treatments, we offer various damp proofing solutions, each with its own advantages. A damp proof course (DPC) is one such option, designed to prevent groundwater from entering walls due to capillary action.

A damp proof membrane (DPM) is a unique addition to a DPC, utilising a silicone material to combat moisture. Buildings are protected from water and rain with this coating process, which includes cement such as shotcrete, providing moisture, water and pressure resistance. To keep out water, cavity walls are constructed to form a space between inner and outer walls, with pressure grouting plugging any gaps in masonry walls.

What Is DPC Injection And How Does It Work?

A silicone-based formulation is injected into a succession of holes along the bottom of a wall affected by rising damp. This creates a chemical damp-proof course.

Contrary to popular belief, chemical DPC does not provide an impenetrable physical barrier. Chemical damp-proofing does, however, effectively fill the pores of a brick wall with a water-repellent silicone compound. This compound lines the pores, reducing the brick’s ability to attract water molecules and decreasing adhesive attraction to a level commensurate with the liquid’s cohesive force.

An injector is utilised to inject silicone-based damp-proofing cream into 12mm holes drilled into the bed joint. The DPC cream quickly permeates through before curing, forming an impervious damp-proof course that combats rising damp in brick and masonry walls.

Managing rising damp in homes is greatly aided by the reliable, straightforward and effective damp-proof injection procedure.

Where Should Chemical Damp Proofing Be Installed?

Even if chemical damp proof systems are installed in stretches of brickwork or blocks, water can still move up through the perp-end joints. This occurs because there must be a continuous channel for the water to pass through. The only layer which can serve as an effective barrier to moisture is the mortar bed joint.

Internally, a DPC should be placed at least 150mm above the external ground level, beneath the ground floor joists or close to the floor if it’s solid. If the two aren’t compatible, further measures may be necessary to protect low-lying areas and flooring timber.

A vertical upstand is needed when a wall projects beyond the new DPC, e.g. if it belongs to an extended terrace, in order to stop horizontal moisture transmission from neighbouring walls. Inject the chemical into holes in a zigzag pattern that follows the mortar line up the wall to a minimum height of 1 metre, thus forming a vertical DPC.

We suggest injecting cream from both sides of the wall for brickwork where there is a cavity. An electro-osmotic system is likely to produce superior results with rubble-filled walls, as damp proofing chemicals are unlikely to be successful in this case.

Which Form Of Chemical DPC Is Best For Preventing Damp?

For over a decade, low-pressure damp-proofing cream has been the go-to silicon-based chemical for damp-proofing walls, replacing the high-pressure injection fluids of the past. Initially, the chemical creams contained between 10-60% active chemicals, with the rest made up of thickeners to form a pasty texture. In contrast, the BBA-approved ‘Damp-Cure’ DPC cream utilises a silane/siloxane formula that is emulsified to create a 100% active cream with no thickeners. This formula allows it to penetrate the capillary pores of stone walls more efficiently.

Fill holes 90% deep along the wall using damp proofing cream at intervals of 100-120mm to ensure an effective rising damp treatment.
